Black screen with a flashing cursor

To the average computer user, when their computer boots to a black screen the immediate reaction is to panic. People just expect their computers to start up normally every time and often forget that computers need regular computer maintenance to keep them running at their best performance.

Finding out that your computer has got a black screen with cursor can be as stab every time you see that blinking dash. The error often looks like a disaster, but can often be a very simple problem.

It could be :
  • faulty CD drive
  • USB Flash drive left in
  • computer did not wake up from sleep
We have to look on the bright side here, because seeing a black screen with a flashing cursor is far better than seeing a black screen with no flashing cursor. You should almost count yourself lucky to have this linking cursor flashing in your face.

What can you do when your computer has a black screen with a flashing cursor?

  1. Unplug all of the devices that do not need to be plugged in.
  2. Restart your computer and see if it works.
  3. Press F8 when starting your computer and choose last known good configuration from the menu.
  4. Go into your BIOS and set the boot order to boot to your hard drive only.
  5. Put in your operating system CD and do a repair.
  6. Check your computer memory to see if you have a faulty piece.
  7. Go to your BIOS and choose to boot to CD and format your computer.
 This is just a few things you can do when you see that your computer has a black screen with a flashing cursor.
